Synagogue's help for Walton Firs

MEMBERS of North West Surrey Synagogue have donated £4,617.76 to the Walton Firs Camp Association.

The funds were raised as part of the synagogue's annual High Holy Days celebration.

The Jewish New Year starts in the autumn.

Rabbi Jackie Tabick said: “We feel, as we come into the New Year, we should share our material goods with those who need some help.”

All members of the synagogue, including children, are encouraged to make a donation to the annual appeal in which members donate to Jewish and non-Jewish causes.

Rabbi Tabick added: “By donating to the Mayor’s Charity, it is our way of giving thanks to the people of Elmbridge for their help and support.”

Walton Firs, just off the Seven Hills Road in Cobham, has existed as a campsite of young people for more than 65 years. 

The Scout Movement is selling the site and the Foundation has been formed to acquire and preserve the facilities for future generations.

Cliff Palmer, from the  Walton Firs Foundation, said: “We are very grateful to North West Surrey Synagogue for its generous donation — not only for the monetary significance but because it shows that the preservation of Walton Firs has affected all faiths and groups of young people in and around Elmbridge.”

To date, the foundation has raised £700,000 but needs to raise another £100,000 by the end of June in order to reach its target of £800,000 to purchase the site.

Outgoing Mayor of Elmbridge Cllr Rosemary Dane adopted the charity for her mayoral year and she accepted the cheque on behalf of the foundation from Rabbi Tabick.
