Football - Loss deepens Cobham's relegation woes

Cobham                             1
Chertsey Town                5

COBHAM were given no respite from their relegation struggles on Saturday as they were beaten 5-1 by Chertsey Town at Anvil Lane.

Facing the league’s top two scorers in Cooper and Pomroy, the Cobham defence stood firm for the first 40 minutes with some solid tackling.

However, for the third match in a row, Cobham then conceded a needless spot kick when David Andrews was penalised for hand ball in the area.

Pomroy sent goalkeeper McGregor the wrong way and Cobham were trailing once more.

The home side’s problems were compounded a few minutes later when Hamsher chased down a ball that looked to be heading for a goal kick and crossed to Pomroy, who tapped in Chertsey’s second.

The home side went three down in the 51st minute when McGregor made a fine save to his right, only to see the loose ball rebound off the knee of Andrew Charles and bound into the unguarded net.

Gonzalez gave Cobham a ray of hope five minutes later with a goal from a long range free kick but any thoughts of a fightback were soon snuffed out.

Just before the hour mark Chertsey scored their fourth goal and Pomroy completed his hatrick when his long range effort bounced awkwardly in front of McGregor and slipped past the goalkeeper into the net.

Having used all their substitutes, an injury to Charles in the 70th minute reduced Cobham to 10 men and Chertsey sealed the win with a fifth goal in the 85th minute.
